Zealand / Researching down-under: the Kiwi track

There exist a number of researching activities, some well-established,
some budding, devoted to New Zealand studies, among which the following
ones are of particular interest:
| Otago University:The Research Centre for New Zealand Studies, whose
aim is to foster graduate, post–graduate
and multi–disciplinary research into
all aspects of New Zealand culture. The Journal of New Zealand Literature
is associated with the work of the Centre; enquiries: Dr Tom Brooking (
History). Deep South is a postgraduate electronic journal which
publishes academic and creative work by the postgraduate students and staff
of Otago University and from other countries. Some of the topics are related
to New Zealand with a slant toward the humanities. Antipodes is
a bilingual, multidisciplinary journal devoted to the study and documentation
of relations between New Zealand and the French–speaking

Victoria University of Wellington: The Stout Research Centre is a well–established centre actively supporting research in topics related to New Zealand: it offers seminars, conferences and opportunities for the study of New Zealand society, history and culture; its resident scholars and associations have produced a widely diverse range of publications relating to New Zealand. The Centre publishes twice yearly its journal New Zealand Studies and is the host institution for the Treaty of Waitangi Research Unit (TOWRU). It has recently created a Master of New Zealand Studies offering a unique interdisciplinary degree programme. www.vuw.ac.nz/home/stout–centre Upcoming conference: WAKA: Pacific Communities 2000-, 28–30 July 2000 (Stout–Centre@vuw.ac.nz, director: Professor Vincent 0'Sullivan) GB: Ian Conrich( Nottingham University) publishes Kakapo Books , a series of booklets on New Zealand culture. The New Zealand Study Group held its 7th Annual Day Conference at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, London, June 28th 2000, on the theme: 'New Zealand, Then … and Now: Society and Culture' . The papers approved by a reading committee are to be published , in Kakapo Books. (contact: ian.conrich@ntu.ac.uk) The BRONZ (British Review of New Zealand Studies) is the only
journal in the UK with an exclusive focus on New Zealand studies. New Zealand
Studies Conferences are organized every four years ( contact: g.robinson@kingston.ac.uk)
