Bookshops on the Web
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

II. Virtual bookstores and bookstores with web-ordering facilities (under construction; all suggestions welcomed):

•Advanced Book Exchange: http://www.abebooks.com. This is the world's largest online consortium for used, rare and out-of-print books.
•Amazon: http://www.amazon.com ; British address: http://www.amazon.co.uk (if you live within the European Union and order books from Amazon in the UK, you will not pay customs duties).
•Barnes & Noble: http://www.barnesanddnoble.com This is one of the largest chains of bookstores in the United States. You will probably find one in most large cities and even some smaller ones on the East and West coasts. Unlike the discount chains, they offer not only a full line of books but also comfortable chairs scattered through the store where you can sit and browse through your choices to see whether you wish to buy, a well-stocked children's corner, a café, in-store activities every weekend, a periodicals corner (sometimes with foreign publications), and — most important of all — a friendly and helpful staff. They have an enormous book warehouse on lower Fifth Avenue near 17th Street in New York, across the street from their main store. It sells used and new books, particularly university textbooks. Their Special Orders Dept. is in the main store. Address of the main store is:

105 Fifth Avenue
New York, NY (1003)
Phone: (1-212) 807-0099

Bibliofind: http://www.bibliofind.com/ An online consortium of used-book sellers of the same type as Advanced Book Exchange. Allied with Amazon, it offers both new and used titles.
Borders: http://www.borders.com/ Another large chain of bookstores with the same type of stores as Barnes & Noble, and the latter's greatest rival.
chaPitre.com: http://www.chapitre.com/ A French virtual bookshop which offers new, used and out-of-print books. Useful for locating books written in English but published in France and which may not necessarily be available through American and British virtual bookshops. May also be contacted by telephone at 01.55.33.60.60 and by Minitel at 3615, code "chapitre."
Princeton Antiques Book Service: http://www.princetonantiques.com/pab.html Like Wessex Books, this shop can be expensive. Now into its fourth decade, the Princeton Antiques Book Service is considered a champion for finding out-of-print and rare books (no new books sold here) and it is the place to turn when you cannot find the book you need anywhere else. If you are a lover of books, you might want to browse in the bins outside on the sidewalk. The mailing and store address is:
Robert E. Ruffolo, Jr.
Princeton Antiques Book Service
2915-17 Atlantic Avenue
Atlantic City, NJ (18401-6395)
Phone: (1-609) 344-1943
Fax: (1-609) 344-1944
E-mail: princetn@earthlink.net

Wessex Books: http://www.wessexbooks.com/ This bookstore specializes in literature, history, social sciences — particularly university press titles — and hard-to-find titles. Although the prices are not always bargain prices, those students of ours who have used this service to obtain the book they could not find anywhere else have been very pleased with the quality of the service. This is both a virtual and a real bookstore (you will find driving directions on its website). It is open 7 days a week: Monday-Saturday 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday Noon to 5:00 PM. The mailing address is:
Wessex Books
558 Santa Cruz Avenue
Menlo Park CA (94025)
Phone:(1- 650) 321-1333
Fax:(1- 650) 856-1984

E-mail: info@wessexbooks.com (for information) and order@wessexbooks.com (for orders)
•WordsWorth Books: http://www.wordsworth.com. A large bookstore which is at one and the same time virtual and real (on Harvard Square, near the university; try and visit if you are ever in Boston). It sells both new and used books and all those who have dealt with it in the past report that the welcome is warm and the employees helpful. Hopefully, nothing has changed. Open every day except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, Monday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM; open Sunday from Noon to 8:00 PM. The mailing adress is:
WordsWorth Books
30 Brattle Street
Cambridge, MA (02138)
Phone: (1-617) 354-5201
Fax: (1-617) 354-4674
