A) Bookstores in France selling publications in English

Bookshop (English books and tapes): 23, rue du Clou dans le Fer, 51100 REIMS (tel.: 03.26.84.99.81; fax: 03.26.47.57.35). This bookshop specializes in English videos, including American films issued in PAL format. It does not carry American-published books but it does carry American publications distributed in Great Britain. You will also find audio tapes, and materials for language-learning.

•Brentano’s: 37, Avenue de l’Opéra, 75002 PARIS (tel: 01 42 61 52 50)

Galerie Urubamba (American Indian bookstore): 4, rue de la Bûcherie, 75005 PARIS (tel: 01 43 54 08 24, Fax: 01 43 29 91 80, open every day from 2 p.m. to 19:30 p.m.).

Librairie Le Tour du Monde: this bookstore had a search service for out-of-print books and books difficult to find, including books published in France in English or about English-speaking countries. Now it uses chaPitre.com, which calls itself the "specialist in out-of-print books" (see the Virtual Bookstores page for a link to ChaPitre.com), as its search service. Located at 29 rue de Condé (RER B: Luxembourg station), 75006 PARIS (tel.: 08.92.35.01.00) where you will find new books.

San Francisco Book Co.: American and English second-hand bookshop. Inventory changes constantly and varies widely, ranging from fiction to philosophy, from the 18th century to the present, with many recent books. Mail and e-mail inquiries accepted; staff helpful. Located at 17, rue Monsieur le Prince (metro: Odéon), 75006 PARIS (tel.: 01.43.29.15.70; fax: 01.43.29.52.48).

Tea and Tattered Pages: second-hand bookshop for books in English of widely varying origins. Does not accept orders (no contact with publishers) but will accept phone, mail and e-mail inquiries about what they have in stock. Allows you to deposit a "wish list" and will inform you if what you have on your list comes in. Does not mail books, which means non-Parisians must arrange to drop by when they are in Paris. Alas, the restaurant facilities are no longer available (change of ownership) but the friendly atmosphere remains. Teas and herb teas as well as bagels, salads, brownies, scones etc. are still served in the tea room. Located at 24, rue Mayet (metro: Duroc), 75006 PARIS (tel.: 01.40.65.94.35).

Village Voice Bookshop: carries a wide variety of new American and English books with a price mark-up which is far from astronomical; orders accepted for books not in stock. Helpful staff. Located at 6 rue Princesse (metro: St. Germain des Prés), 75006 PARIS (tel.: 01.46.33.36.47; fax: 01.46.33.27.48).
