At the coming conference I would like to talk about the results of Brandes' trip to Russia , his lectures in St. Petersburg and Moscow . His critical works were widely read and popular in Russia by that time, thus Brandes' using the example of Dickens in “Impressions of Russia” and public lectures served as a specific clarifying idea of Russian literary situation. As it came out, “Europe-centered” criticism of Brandes applied to the works of Turgenev and Dostoevsky proved to be quite effective and illustrative for the enthusiastic readers of Dickens' novels. Stressing similarities and differences of the authors Brandes also succeeded in proving the interrelatedness of European/English and Russian literary evolution process.
